Monthly Salary Range: $4414.07 - $5633.59

Normally, entering salaries are at the first step of the range allocated to the classification. Credit will be given for experience exceeding the minimum requirements, particularly for comparable experience with another school district.

NOTE: A WRITTEN TEST IS REQUIRED. The test is scheduled for Monday, December 6, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in C333. Applicants must bring to the test a Valid California Driver License or Identification card. No further notification of this test will be mailed to applicants.

With limited direction and supervision, performs journey level work maintaining, repairing, operating, and installing heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilating units, appliances, water chillers and auxiliary equipment, and does related work as required. Incumbents in the class of Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Ventilation Technician are distinguished from those in the class of Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Ventilations Mechanic by a greater degree of specialized knowledge and independence of action, broader work assignments and the regular performance of a full range of skilled tasks in a specialized trade without direct supervision. Has responsibility for the trouble-free maintenance and operation of a variety of air conditioning and ventilation equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  1. Checks, diagnoses, repairs, replaces, adjusts and/or installs HVAC, refrigeration, and/or water-type and related equipments/systems (including air compressors that assist HVAC, refrigeration and water-type related equipment).
  2. Prepares requisitions for necessary parts and equipments; determines cost of material and labor and/or coordinates repairs, recommends replacement when necessary, and if repair is not feasible.
  3. Checks levels of fluid/gases; conducts, maintains, evaluates log entries, chemical testing, adjust/services filters, lines, valves and control components relating to any HVAC, refrigeration, and water-type and related equipment/systems.
  4. Assists with layout and installs major equipment; plans layout and installs minor equipment relating to HVAC, refrigeration, and water-type and related equipment/system.
  5. Performs pipefitting.
  6. Checks, diagnoses, repairs, replaces, adjusts electrical, electronic, pneumatic, digital controls or wiring regarding HVAC or EMS or related equipment/systems.
  7. Assists in operating campus water chillers and related equipment (including cooling towers or loops), diagnosing problems related to equipment or parts controlling the unit that may affect the end result of cooling to the campus.
  8. Performs preventive maintenance checks and repairs to HVAC, refrigeration, water-type and related equipments/systems.
  9. Uses the computerized Energy Management System.
  10. Performs or recommends air balancing for internal environmental spaces relating to HVAC needs, requirements and practices in order to comply with current state HVAC codes throughout the campus buildings.
  11. Checks, repairs, adjusts, and performs preventive maintenance of HVAC, refrigeration and water-type and related equipment including V-belts, pumps, bearings, exhaust fans, ice machines, air compressors, etc.
  12. Reports equipment problems, malfunctions or operational status to supervisors.
  13. Answers emergency calls at all hours, as needed.
  14. At the request of a supervisor, performs a variety of unscheduled duties normally and traditionally performed by an Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Ventilation Technician.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school AND completion of the equivalent of four-year apprenticeship or better in HVAC, refrigeration, water-type and related equipments/systems or certification from a recognized quality trade school resulting in journeyman status; AND at least five years of experience working at journeyman level regarding repairs and installation of pumps and pipes regarding any water or HVAC equipment/systems (this includes air compressors).

Knowledge and Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in operating, maintaining and repairing of HVAC or refrigeration or water-type systems. Knowledge of safety and trade codes and practices. Ability to plan and work from schematic drawings and blue prints; submit as-built modifications; follow and give oral and written instructions; to hear well; distinguish colors as required on job; perform physically heavy work, often in difficult locations; to lift and push, on occasion, a minimum of 50 pounds; bend; climb stairs, squat, kneel, walk a lot (80%) of time), crawl, and/or work in tunnels which may be three feet in diameter; stand for long periods of time; climb and/or work on a ladder, roof top, cooling towers, etc., above one story; drive a car, small truck (automatic and/or stick-shift), gas scooter and/or electric cart; work in a multiethnic environment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: A valid California Driver License is required.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing and pulling, walking, sitting, and standing for extended periods of time, dexterity of hands and fingers, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, and kneeling or crouching.
